Catholic Memorial outlasts Franklin in Bill Young’s 500th career game as Memorial coach

FRANKLIN – Catholic Memorial head coach Bill Young’s 500th career game on the Crusader sideline was one of the more eventual contests of his tenure.

Corey Smith rushed for four touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 1:33 left in the game, as defending Division 4 state champion Crusaders squeaked past defending Division 1 state champion Franklin, 34-28, Friday night in the season opener for both schools.

Sabers running back Terrance Shelton attempted to match Smith’s huge night on the ground with a trio of rushing touchdowns of his own, including a game-tying score from a yard out with 6:06 left in the fourth quarter, to tie the game at 28.
