Real Madrid continued their perfect start to the new LaLiga season with a narrow 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Atletico Madrid at the Civitas Metropolitano.
Rodrygo gave Real an early lead in the first half after a fantastic through ball from Aurelien Tchouameni. The French midfielder delightfully chipped the ball over Atleti’s defence to pick out the Brazilian who struck it first time past Jan Oblak.
Real then doubled their lead after Federico Valverde smashed home when Vinicius Junior’s strike crashed off the post into the path of the Uruguayan.
Seven minutes from the end, Atleti pulled one back when the ball was swung in and deflected off Mario Hermoso’s arm into the back of the net. Thibaut Courtois came to clear but missed the ball and paid for the mistake.
Hermoso’s 20-minute cameo ultimately became one to forget as the substitute was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in less than three minutes. The dismissal came at a vital time with Atleti searching for an equaliser in injury time.
From then on, Real applied their experience and saw out the match to continue their impeccable start to the new season. Atletico suffered back-to-back defeats after they were also beaten by Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League earlier in the week.
