The Classic Roundup: Diamond Bar, Pasadena, La Mirada, Damien all first-round winners

Recap of Monday’s first round in The Classic, hosted by Damien high school and played at surrounding locations featuring several boys basketball divisions.

Diamond Bar 47, Hawaii’s Maryknoll 41: The Brahmas trailed by six points after three quarters but came back to beat the team from Hawaii behind a game-high 18 points from senior Malcolm Bell, who also had nine rebounds. Alex Kim added 12 points and Dior Brown finished with eight points. Diamond Bar, who already owns two tournament titles this season, advances to Tuesday’s quarterfinals against Pasadena at San Dimas high school on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Damien 77, Shadow Hills 22: The Spartans had an easy time in the first round with sophomore Nate Garcia scoring a game-high 24 points to go with 12 rebounds. Xavier Clinton added 16 points and Elijah Brown had 10 points. The Spartans will take on Bosco Tech in Tuesday’s quarterfinals at Damien at 1 p.m.

Bosco Tech 71, Ponderosa 68: Ryan Osborne helped Bosco Tech improve to 12-2 by contributing a team-high 27 points to go with seven rebounds in their first round win. Darius Benitez also played well, scoring 18 pionts and Dominic Gallardo gave them three players in double figures with 14 points. Bosco Tech will take on Damien in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Pasadena 61, Arizona’s Trivium Prep 41: The Bulldogs trailed at halftime, but turned it on in the third quarter and pulled away in the second half to advance to the quarterfinals, where they will ta
